How to Write a Good Conclusion Paragraph?

Tips on how to start a conclusion, how to develop it and how to finish it.

Just like John Cutter in Christopher Nolan`s The Prestige has been explaining one little girl that every magic trick consists of three parts (the pledge, the turn, the prestige), every author in his deep writer`s childhood has been explained that every essay consists of three parts (introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion).

Through the period of writing skills acquisition grown-up writer starts to understand that every part of the essay has its own complexity level. Introduction traditionally is the most complex part though it is very short. Body paragraphs are less complex but demand large amount of work because of the size. Conclusion of an essay usually just echoes with introduction and somehow touches the body paragraphs.

But does conclusion occur to be the simplest part? Yes. Then should author pay it less attention comparing with the other parts? Definitely, no. As in the case of magic trick the essay would “work” only if all of the parts done well. Magic of introduction and body just like the magic of the pledge and the turn go up in smoke without conclusion (the prestige).

What is a conclusion?

The essence of the conclusion part is in correlating the information given in introduction and body paragraphs. This is the unifying and concluding paragraph (-s) that gives reader the understanding of coherence and integrity of everything you said earlier.

You need to confirm reader`s comprehension of the text providing qualitative and relevant summary of your text. In this confirmation comprises writers` assurance that conclusion is the easiest part. And this is really so. You do not need to invent and come up with something that was not mentioned in previous parts.

Although you may come up with some unexpected findings that occurred in your mind only in accordance with statements in the text, but it is not obligatory. The main work you carry in body paragraphs. There you spotlight the question from different sides,  or maybe from the one side, but still only body paragraphs contain the most fruity information.

Thus your conclusion words belong only to you and express only your point of view. It is clear that each writer has his own point of view on the problem he or she lightens in the essay. However, the simplest way to complete your essay without excrescent efforts is just to restate thesis and sum up arguments.

But the most successive writers and intelligent human beings at all usually contribute a little or maybe even a considerable part of themselves in the reflections given, for example, in the form of writing.

Definition of conclusion

Conclusion obviously is the last part of the essay which aims in summing up all the thoughts given in the previous parts. Depending on the type of the essay its length may differ. In some way the conclusion part is a mirror to the introduction part: you need to restate the main parts of introduction in conclusion.

Writing a conclusion

Now you roughly understand what you have to face when you face the conclusion part of the essay. The next step is to figure out how to cope with this. You remember that the hardest work is done but you do not want to spoil your previous efforts with the unarticulated ending. So keep concentrated!

Let`s look through some advices that will definitely help you to create the greatest ending of your outstanding essay.

  • Integrity. As it was told earlier, the main aim of the conclusion is to affirm readers` comprehension of the previous parts. In order to show the reader that you wrote your text competently and he or she caught the thread of your narration, you need to tie the beginning of the text with the ending by the iterations.

This would show reader that you yourself never missed the thread of narration throughout the text. It would look like that you show your respect to the beginning that is the most important in the light of text`s sense.

Also do not forget to conclude in a logically coherent way. Your bright verbal constructions will lose its brightness if you digress from the logical line of the essay.

  • Density. When you are concluding the essay try to avoid unnecessary words and expressions. Speak only on the case. Even if your essay does not demand obligatory shortening like a short essay does, no one needs common phrases and lead-in constructions in the text.

Focus on the most important about the conclusions and show it to the reader without blurring. Do not deface the conclusion part with disrespect to the reader by wasting his or her time on reading “in conclusion I wanted to say”.

This is both is the third advice and résumé of the article. The conclusion sentences are the last thing your reader memorizes. Do not make him think like “yeah, that`s all clear, thank you” and omit thorough reading of the conclusion. Even if reader could not help stop reading your text up to the conclusion part it does not mean that he is not changing his mind.

In the very first sentences of the conclusion you can show your reader that this part is unnecessary to read because it would be only mirror reflection of the introduction. Readers also got used to the fact that conclusion is often similar to the beginnings.

If you consider yourself a great writer your aim is to debunk this myth and make your reader enjoy your conclusions. In some way it is the form of respect for your own self. Leave your reader in reflections after your conclusion. State something intriguing and exciting. Leave questions but affirm the integrity of the text. And do not minimize the importance of the ending.

However, if your aim is only in accomplishing a college assignment without demonstrating your potentially great writing skills, well then you may restate your thesis statement and sum up the arguments. But then the magic goes up in smoke without dramatic prestige.
