How to Write a Paragraph in 2018?

What is the Paragraph? Answering literally, it is the unit of the text. Paragraph is bigger unit than a sentence, but the lesser one than a chapter. Each unit of everything including the texts` units serves together with the other units for the main objective (in our case the main objective is the text and its integrity).

Retreating from a kind of military vocabulary, we need to consider paragraph as a part of the art of writing. Writing has its specific rules and since paragraph is a part of writing, it also has its own rules. But these rules change simultaneously with the aims of writing.

With the advent of the Internet that gives possibility everyone to in some way become a writer, ideas of writing rules are-a-changing. So are the rules of creating a paragraph. For this purpose each self-respecting writer should familiarize with all concepts and views on writing a paragraph.

How to Write Paragraphs Due to the Long-established View

Picture of writing purposes in the belle époque (before emergence of the Net), when the approximate rules of writing have been established, suggests that writing can be created only by a professional writer. Everyone who has been writing unprofessionally had a name of a scribomaniac. So remember that if you decide to express your feeling in the Net in the form of writing you are in some way a maniac.

Writing Rules

Writing here pursue more semantic aspects. The writing cannot exist without a sense and importance for the reader. New-fashioned texts are aimed to attract readers even if they do not need reading it. Professional old-fashioned writer does not want to attract anyone. He knows that if someone decides to read his text this reader will get the best deep development of thoughts.

That is why everything subordinates to the filling of the text. The rules of writing exclude visual attractiveness. However, visually well-structured large paragraphs` text is quite more attractive than modern little paragraphs` one. That is why these new scribomaniacs stick to the rules, which would be represented further, comprehend it too literally.

Paragraph Rules

Each paragraph expresses and supports one single idea. No matter how long it is, its length is defined by the needs of this idea. Paragraph does not end until the writer unveiled this idea. In literary work everything depends on artist`s view on how it should be. It is only author to decide where should it end according to the aims of the single paragraph (dramatic effect, tempo, pace and structure).

Important thing here is logical coherence of the thought. Continuing the previous statement, one idea cannot be started in one paragraph and ended up in the next one or even through several paragraphs (in literary works lyrical digressions can interrupt the thought).

Moreover, the situation when one thought starts in the middle of the paragraph (what also means that the beginning of this paragraph contains the other thought that is not finished in a separate paragraph) and finished in the middle of the other one suggesting that one more thought would be expressed incorrectly is impossible.

Writing Paragraphs in Nowadays World

These rules create the impression that they are logical. What has changed then? We have changed. After the emergence of the possibility to write for non-professionals the value of the filling of the writings depreciates.

Internet became a place where readers can save their time. Reading in earlier times meant that reader had to spend a lot of time on this process and that is why he was ready to comprehend large paragraphs.

Today reading on the Net suggests that you can spend 5-10 minutes and get plenty of use but in some way superficial information. Sometimes it can be useless but you still ready to spend these 5-10 minutes because it won`t harm your timetable.

The main rule

For this purpose, the rules of composing the paragraphs have changed. There is no more connection between paragraph content and the amount of the ideas given there. Most often, one idea is represented in plenty of paragraphs.

Because the main rule here is the rule that the paragraph should not be longer than 3-4 lines. Notice that accents shift from the semantic perception towards visual perception. As it was told earlier when you decide to read old-fashioned paragraphs you are ready to cover large ones.

But in the Net you decide to read something regardless of the semantic content. In other words this new structure of paragraphs invites you to read the text basing only on what you see. And what do you see? You see that text is attractively divided into enormous amount of parts (what in some a\way may mean enormous amount of pieces of information) and you unconsciously decide that this form of text would be read easily.

You may not even need to read it but you cannot deny yourself the pleasure to spend your precious time on a kind of quick entertainment. Distractions are the main trend in nowadays world. The amount of intellectual work rises so the amount of distractions from this work does.

However, you cannot just write and press `enter` button after every 4 lines of the text.

  • Planning. This new rule suggests more thorough planning of the structure. Writing from scratch and sticking to this rule means that you will certainly fail. Since you are sticking to this rule you accept the fact that whole text should be seen evenly. And that is why you have no chance to correctly structure your paragraphs writing from scratch.
  • Condensing. Also it implies that you need to enhance the value of the paragraph. In a traditional large paragraph the major part of the thought can be distributed unevenly. Here you need to somehow emphasize the importance of the thought given in a paragraph. You cannot use one paragraph only in the role of the bridge to the thought which is represented further in the text.
