Occupational Wellness Since turning 16 years old I have always had a full time job, and for the past 15 years I have been searching to find the right job for me. Whether at a restaurant or in an office setting I have always strived to work my hardest and to show my managers that they made a great choice hiring me. Up till now I really haven’t thought about whether or not the job I was at made me happy, or if I felt like at the end of the day that I truly loved my job. Because what we do for a living encompasses so much of our time, it’s important for our overall well-being to do what we love and love what we do. When people are doing what they were meant to do, they deepen their sense of meaning and purpose (Occupational Wellness, n. d. ). ” Now that I have turned 31, I feel like I need to put goals in place to work towards a stable job that pays well to provide for my future, a job that still leaves me with free time for my friends and family, and a job that I know I can be happy working at until retirement.

With that said I know I need to put together an Occupational Wellness plan that can help me gain the tools and knowledge needed to get me to that perfect job. The way I will put together a strong plan is by focusing on five steps; Developing personal awareness, Establishing initial priorities, Exploring and evaluating these initial priorities, Developing action steps toward a priority goal, and lastly appraising progress (Harper R. , Drake D. , Larkin L. , Manning M, and Woods B. , 2010, Occupational and Educational Wellness).

By putting a plan together now early in my career I can guarantee myself less stress and more happiness at work. With happiness comes productivity, and with productivity comes praise and promotions. You have to like what you do in order to be fully productive, I know from personal experience that being unhappy at work shows in your work. Lastly and most important, I need to get the education to be ready for those upper level jobs, experience helps but education is the key to getting ahead.

When it comes to setting up an occupational wellness plan the first thing I need to do is setup a list of specific action steps I need to take to get the perfect job for me, a job that will provide happiness and financial stability for me and my family. The first thing I will do is ask myself four short questions to help determine what part of IT I want to go into; what do I do well, what part of IT do I enjoy doing the most, what are my needs as they relate to my career, and what do I consider as my core beliefs (Harper, et al. , 2010, section Occupational and Educational Wellness)?

The second step I must take once I have chosen my career path is researching any required training or certifications I might need to take in addition to my degree. Once I have the list of training I need I will start enrolling in the classes needed and get them out of the way while I finish my IT degree. Next I will take some time to research ways that I can get extra experience on the side in my chosen field, which for me is desktop support. The best way that I have found to accomplish this is by volunteering to help out the desktop department at work, they are always short- handed and never turn down the help.

This will help me in two ways, it will give me free experience and it will look great to my boss and also the manager that is over the desktop department, showing them both that I have the drive and determination to be in desktop. Now that I know the steps I need to take, I need to setup a specific time line as to when I want to have all of this accomplished. The best way to break this down is to start with the shortest goals and branch out from there, even the little things should have some kind of time line attached to them (How to setup a strong action plan, 2008).

The first goal that I have set for myself, is within the next month I would like to have a full list of certifications I will need, and where I need to go to attain these certifications. I would also like to have a sit down conversation with the manager of desktop and also with my boss letting them know where I want to take my career within IT and that I want to be considered for any projects in desktop where they might need extra help. The next goal I have set is that within the next six months I would like to have completed the extra certifications I will need in addition to my IT degree.

In regards to my Associates Degree, I plan to have it complete by the Winter of 2013, and approximately 6 months to a year after graduation I would like to go back to school to get my Bachelors degree. The last goal that I have set is that within 2 to 3 months of graduation I would like to have secured a position in the desktop support department at my current company or another company close to me. Wellness Plan Timeline: Possible Barriers: When it comes to putting together a wellness plan another thing that you need to take into account is unexpected barriers.

Is there something or someone that can stand in the way of you reaching your goal? When thinking about possible barriers the first two that come to mind are time and money, it takes time and money to go back to school and time to research the things needed to get to your ultimate goal. Another barrier that I found when reading my textbook was tunnel vision, “tunnel vision occurs when people eliminate possible career options solely because they have no previous experience in that area or do not at this time have the training or education required for that specific career area (Harper, et al. , 2010). Another barrier is a bad or negative attitude, you have to want to go back to school and you have to want to work towards a new career, having a bad attitude can make you your own worst enemy when it comes to succeeding (Harper, et al. , 2010). Last but not least, fear of change and fear of failure can most definitely stand in the way of success, you have to be ok with failing every once in a while, you aren’t always going to be the best at everything (Harper, et al. , 2010). The key is to pick yourself back up after a failure and keep trying, determination will get you where you want to be.

The last thing that I need to look at when putting together my wellness plan is what kind of support system I will have while going through this journey. Me myself I know that having a strong support system can mean the difference between failure and success. I don’t care what anyone says, there are always times when you need a little push, or a helping hand. “The people who surround you–your support system–will determine how well you will build and maintain the self-confidence necessary for success.
