What it is Plagiarism and How to Avoid It?

If you steal from one author it’s plagiarism; if you steal from many it’s research.

If you have some problems with creating unique texts, this blog is for you. Plagiarizing can create a lot of problems for each of us regardless of gender and age. Students won’t receive a high grade for the work that contains plagiarism.

Plagiarism Definition

Plagiarism is a serious offense that can have severe consequences. Plagiarism can be defined as a representation of the words or ideas of another person as your own. If you use other people’s works without mentioning the source, it is called plagiarism. Representing an idea or product derived from an existing source that was already developed, either new or original is also seen as falsification. Unfortunately, only some people consider copying information from various Internet sources as a crime. Nevertheless, all that is published on the Internet is a form of expression of an idea that is protected by copyright laws. The use of plagiarism can destroy your personal, scientific and professional reputation.

How to Avoid Plagiarism

There are many ways to avoid plagiarism in your writing. One of the most effective is the reference, as well as the ability to describe the basic idea of the source text in your own words. To avoid falsification in writing you must write an original work and make your contribution to the field of research.

Paraphrasing and summarizing other ideas is a good way of avoiding a crime. Imagine that you explain the material in your own words to a friend or a classmate. Spend more time paraphrasing and creating links in your work. After all, it is well known that many students are forced to plagiarize when writing their work because of the rigid time constraints they must obey. Interesting type of information from the Internet, whether it is a blog, correspondence data or social networking site, should be printed out. It is forbidden to insert whole fragments into your paper.

6 Ways to Avoid Plagiarism

Basically there are 6 rules.

  1. Find out how to quote the original sources correctly. Since there is a wide choice of source citation styles, specify what style your teachers intend to use. Figure out what method every teacher prefers to use. If you have several options, select one method and use it continuously.
  2. You can create a work plan for your assignment. Summarize your original idea and make a plan for its presentation. Make drafts and sketches, indicate which sources you intend to use and explain how you intend to use them.
  3. Study the topic. The more you are familiar with the topic of your work, the better you will express your thoughts differently. The more sources you look at, the better you’ll understand the subject. Be sure to mention the sources used. In order to avoid a constant citation, you should study the issue before you start writing the text. This will help you to generate your own opinion, on which your text will be based. Then other people’s ideas will not be a fundamental core, but rather a complement to your own thoughts, opinions, and assumptions.
  4. While looking for sources, try to take some notes. Proper note-taking will help you to organize your own thoughts and express other people’s thoughts in your own words. You should read the material from the source several times to understand the main idea, then postpone it and write down the theses of the future work. When you start writing, you will be able to use these notes with theses.
  5. Cite the sources. If you are not sure about the reliability of a particular source, it will be better to skip it.  Always remember the rules of citation. Regardless of whether you use direct or indirect quoting (that is, copying fragments of someone else’s material verbatim or retelling them in your own words), you need to specify the author and its source.
  6. Be careful, clearly define who owns those ideas and words. One citation is not enough. Clearly, indicate who the author of the text is.

Use Online Plagiarism Checkers

Plagiarism checkers are programs that conduct a unique text matching algorithm, capable of detecting an exact and inaccurate correspondence between the various materials and sources.  After the comparison, you will get a detailed report, indicating the percentage of the plagiarism, which coincides with the content that has been already created.

You can find good free plagiarism checker for students online. It is available for teachers as well. This tool allows you to determine whether your work is unique or similar to the one that has been already created.

By knowing what plagiarism is and using all tips and tricks on how to avoid falsification in writing you will be able to create unique text and impress your teacher.
